Description
This spring, as my colleagues and I prepared to open the latest redesign of the Museum's gallery of the Islamic world--the new Wirth Gallery of the Middle East--I thought back on how the display of museum objects has evolved over the past 40 years. Ideas about how to display artifacts have changed over the years from the days of showing "pretty objects" with very little curatorial input to providing more and more historical context, bringing to light the stories the objects have to tell. As I take you through the history of that transformation, I will be returning to a single object--a large storage jar from Raqqa, Syria, dating from the 12th century--to demonstrate how museum philosophies of the day have affected where and how this jar has been displayed in three major redesigns of the gallery during my tenure at the ROM.
